Kestrel Lane Bench Works hand joinery, one bench

Projects

A few pieces, roughly in the order they left the shop.

Ash trestle table, 2.4 m

Two trestles, wedged through-tenons, a top of five boards joined with a sprung glue line. The client wanted it to come apart for a narrow staircase; it knocks down in about four minutes with a mallet.

Dovetailed tool chest in reclaimed pine

Boards came from the roof of a demolished mill, full of nail holes that were left visible. Three sliding tills, a saw rack in the lid, and a coat of shellac thin enough to still show the old weathering.

Cherry wall cabinet

Frame and panel doors with a shallow raised field, hung on brass butts. The interior is fitted for a set of moulding planes, so every shelf is a different height.

Chair repairs, ongoing

Country chairs mostly, with joints that were originally hide-glued and can therefore be taken apart with steam and put back without any of the old wood being lost. This is the most satisfying work the shop does and the least photogenic.
